The U.S. Census Bureau is looking to hire 2,000 temporary workers in Cameron County — and an equal number from Hidalgo County. Thirty-nine census offices already have been set up statewide, including offices in La Feria and Edinburg.
Census jobs pay between $8 and $24 an hour, depending on the position. The work begins in March and lasts five to ten weeks, a portion of which will be paid training. Census workers jobs around Brownsville start at $10.50 an hour, though the pay scale is higher in some other cities.
Anyone can apply, unemployed and employed alike. It’s not unusual for some census workers to have day jobs and canvass neighborhoods in the evening.
Most of the positions are for door-to-door census takers, also known as enumerators, although a few office jobs are available, as well. Census takers will only knock on your door if you do not fill out and return the questionnaire the Census Bureau mails to every household in America.
