2010 Census Bureau to put 1,000 to work

Apply Online! A friendly, familiar face is one of the qualifications the U.S. Census Bureau will look for when it begins hiring as many as 1,000 cencus workers early next year to help with the 2010 Census in Sioux City.

The agency recently opened a Sioux City office on Sergeant Road, and 35 positions have already been filled. Chattin-Reynolds said the bureau will recruit about 1,000 people locally, 50 to work in the Sioux City office and about 950 to do field work. A total of 5,000 census workers will be hired statewide by spring.

Lifelong Sioux City resident James Meyers, office manager in Sioux City, said census work is a good opportunity at a pay range of $9 to $15 an hour, plus mileage and training. “It’s an extra income for a lot of people,” Meyers said. “I have a lot of retired people or students. … Most of the field work, which is the majority of our jobs — that’s at night and weekends, which is nice for people.”

There are part time Sioux City Jobs as well as full time positions.

Most positions are temporary, four to eight weeks, and part time, but workers operate within their own communities, he said. Anyone looking for a census job is required to fill out an application and take a basic skills test.

Faderico Linaras, 46, of Sioux City, was at the agency Friday morning and was enthusiastic when he heard about local census job opportunities.  Linaras, who is fluent in English and Spanish, said he was working in sales at Orkin Pest and Termite Control in Sioux City but that his position was eliminated earlier this year. “I’m looking for a job and it would help me out a lot, and I like to work with people,” Linaras said.

Brandon Hughes, 38, of Sioux City, said he was unemployed and looking for any kind of work, even temporary, that pays well. “I’m looking for something with good pay, and it seems like it has good compensation,” Hughes said. “The census helps the government. So, I’m interested in that.
